Are there grants for conservatory roof replacement?

The short answer

There is no general government grant for replacing a conservatory roof in the UK. The national energy schemes fund loft and wall insulation and heating, and as a rule do not cover conservatory roofs. The 0% VAT rate on energy saving materials runs until March 2027, but conservatory roof panels are not normally within it. Most homes pay £3,000 to £7,500 themselves.

Why the answer is usually no

Energy efficiency grants in the UK are designed to cut the heating bills of the main house, usually for households on lower incomes or in homes with poor energy ratings. They pay for things like loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, solid wall insulation and heating upgrades, where the saving on the whole home is large and easy to measure.

A conservatory sits outside that picture. Most conservatories are exempt from building regulations precisely because they are separated from the house by external quality doors and have no fixed heating from the house system. A conservatory separated from the house in that way is normally left out of the home's Energy Performance Certificate assessment too, so improving its roof does not move the rating that most schemes are measured against.

That is why we tell people plainly that a grant is unlikely. It is better to know that before you plan the money than to wait for a scheme that will not come.

The schemes people ask about

Scheme or relief What it funds Does it cover a conservatory roof?
Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) Insulation and heating for low income and vulnerable households, paid for by energy suppliers Not as a rule. It targets the main home's walls, loft and heating
Great British Insulation Scheme Single insulation measures such as cavity wall or loft insulation for lower rated homes Not as a rule, for the same reason
0% VAT on energy saving materials Installed insulation and certain heating measures in homes, until 31 March 2027 Conservatory roof panels are not normally within it. Ask your installer how they apply VAT
Council home repair help Varies by council, usually urgent repairs or safety for vulnerable owners Rarely. Ask your council if you think you might qualify
Disabled Facilities Grant Adaptations so a disabled person can live safely at home Only in unusual cases where the work is part of an approved adaptation

Scheme rules and dates change, so check the current position on the official pages. The government's energy efficiency help page and HMRC's guidance on VAT on energy saving materials are the places to start. Scotland and Wales run their own schemes, which are listed on their government sites.

Watch out for grant cold calls

Every year people get calls, leaflets and doorstep visits offering a "government grant" for a new conservatory roof. There is no national grant of that kind. If someone says there is, ask for the name of the scheme and check it on gov.uk before giving any personal details or paying a deposit.

A genuine energy scheme will never ask you to pay a fee to unlock a grant. If a caller asks for money up front to secure funding, hang up.

What you pay without a grant

Our fitted prices include taking off and recycling the old roof, 75 mm insulated panels made to measure in your colour, fitting and a 10 year insurance backed guarantee.

Roof size Typical styles Price from Fitting time
Small, up to 12 m² Lean-to, small Edwardian £3,000 Usually 1 day
Medium, 12 to 25 m² Edwardian, Victorian, gable end £4,000 1 to 2 days
Large, 25 m² and over Large Victorian, P-shape £5,000 2 to 3 days

Most homes pay £3,000 to £7,500, which is about £250 to £450 per m² of roof. Style changes the price too: a lean-to is the cheapest, then Edwardian (about 6% more), Victorian (10%), gable end (12%) and P-shape (16%). The full breakdown is on our conservatory roof panels cost page.

Honest ways to bring the cost down

Keep the extras to what you will use

Glazed roof lights are £395 each, LED spotlights £345 and new gutters and fascia £295. Most people choose one or two roof lights. If your gutters are sound, you may not need new ones, and the survey will tell you.

Compare the cheaper options fairly

Internal insulation fitted under the old roof costs about £1,000 to £3,200, with an average of about £2,850 for a fitted system. It is cheaper up front, but the old roof stays on top, so leaks, discoloured sheets and rain noise remain. New polycarbonate sheets cost £2,000 to £3,500 for a 3 m by 3 m roof, but 25 mm sheets still have a U-value of about 1.6. Our guide to conservatory roof insulation sets out the options side by side.

Count the running cost saving

A new roof will not pay you back like a grant, but it does cut heat loss. On a 12 m² roof kept warm through the heating season with an electric heater, 16 mm polycarbonate loses about 1,424 kWh a year, costing about £375 at the electricity price cap rate of 26.32p per kWh. Our panels at a U-value of about 0.43 lose about 266 kWh, or about £70. That is a saving of about £305 a year if you heat the room that way. Our guide to the cost of heating a conservatory shows the sums for gas too.

Replace once rather than twice

Polycarbonate usually lasts about 10 to 20 years before it yellows and leaks. Spending £2,000 to £3,500 on new sheets now and facing the same job again later can cost more over time than one insulated roof.

Is it worth doing without a grant?

That depends on how you use the room. If the conservatory is too hot to sit in from May to September and too cold from November to March, an insulated roof turns it into a room you can use most of the year. Conservatories regularly pass 35 to 40°C in summer, and an opaque insulated roof blocks direct sun on the roof. Condensation largely stops and the foam core damps rain noise.

If you only use the room for storage, or you are happy with it as it is, a grant would not change the case much, and a cheaper repair may be the better choice. Our guide to whether insulated roof panels are worth it goes through the trade-offs.

Questions people ask

Is there a government grant for a new conservatory roof?

No, there is no general grant for replacing a conservatory roof. The national energy schemes focus on the main home and do not cover conservatory roofs as a rule.

Can I get 0% VAT on conservatory roof panels?

The 0% VAT rate for energy saving materials runs until 31 March 2027, but conservatory roof panels are not normally within it. Ask your installer how VAT applies to your quote.

Does ECO4 cover conservatory roof insulation?

Not as a rule. ECO4 and the Great British Insulation Scheme target the walls, loft and heating of the main home, usually for lower income households or homes with low energy ratings.

Someone called offering a conservatory roof grant. Is it real?

There is no national grant of that kind. Ask for the scheme name, check it on gov.uk, and never pay a fee to unlock funding.
